Laduree, Westfield Sydney, CBD

I've had this post sitting around for a bit too long! I was extremely hyped about Laduree when it first opened inside Westfield Sydney, but what I wasn't so hyped about was that queue that seemed to snake on forever... In the end, I put buying macarons from Laduree off for quite a while until the craziness around it died down slightly. But by then, I heard that these weren't made fresh in Sydney, but shipped frozen to be sold here.

Packaging sure was cute! Loved the box it came in :)

Box of 6, $23.00
So how did these compare to the big Sydney names such as Adriano Zumbo? I ended up getting salted caramel, lemon lime marshmallow, hazelnut, strawberry marshmallow, praline, and coffee. The texture was quite wonderful, nice and soft. I found the marshmallow filling a tad too sweet and odd in texture - maybe because I'm not used to having a spongy centre in my macarons? I think I prefer the rich ganaches that Zumbo has haha. I also found the flavours to be quite subtle and not as strong. While these were nice, they weren't mindblowingly good and I am a bit skeptical about justifying the $3.20 price tag per macaron. It cost extra for the box as well! I think I may stick to the ones at the Lindt Cafe or Adriano Zumbo's for my macaron fix :)

  1. Meh. I don't like that the macrons are imported...why can't the create jobs and have people bake them here. I did try the licorice one out of curiosity and it was "OK" (no queue either - I think the hype has died RIGHT down).

    1. I definitely agree - if you're going to set up a store, why not import some of your pastry chefs along with it if reluctant to share the recipe? Yep, the macarons were definitely more an okay sort of nice but not good enough to warrant a return visit any time soon!

  2. I found the macarons quite different to the Laduree ones in France. These are made in Switzerland and there is a difference in the quality, especially when you're paying that much for them.

    1. Interesting to know that there's a difference... I think I will have to test out the difference in quality when I'm in France and Switzerland one day - excuse to gorge out on the sweets ;)

  3. I still think CreAsian and MakMak have some of the best macarons in Sydney.

    1. Unfortunately I think I had a bad batch of macarons last time from CreAsion because I really did not enjoy them that much :( Maybe I will give them another chance if I'm nearby in the area!

  4. The ones at Laduree Sydney are quite different to the ones in Paris. It may not have been the best here, but really, it still is better than half the macarons sold out there. I know there's the whole fuss about it being imported and being made in Switzerland and not France, but doesn't that make you wonder about all other exclusive items being sold just like Laduree? I'm sure they aren't the only ones to do it.

    1. Frozen or not, I don't think it impacts too much on my overall decision - it really depends on overall flavour and texture and in the end, the Laduree macarons are better than a lot of macarons you can get out there, but I just believe that they are much too expensive when you can get ones that are just as good, if not better, for cheaper elsewhere!

  7. Whilst the prices are ridiculously over the top (especially when you're paying for the box as well!)and the marshmellow fillings are frankly odd, I have to say I love Laduree Sydney macarons. You should definitely visit Mak Mak's store anytime you're down Newtown.

    1. I think the marshmallow would take some getting used to though I think I will stick to the creamy kinds of macarons :P I've heard about the Mak Mak store which opened up in Newtown! I will have to make a pit stop some time soon. Thanks for the reminder :)
